Literary Awards 2000 |

Last year the King's Award was a great
success, with submissions from almost every island in the
Eastern Caribbean. The top honour First Prize was
unamimously awarded by each of the four judges to Ms.
Mary Geo. Quinn of Antigua. Her prize of EC$1000 was
presented at a small ceremony at the Redcliffe Tavern in
February 2000.
Ms. Quinn's manuscript "Recollections" was
called by one of the judges "A true Caribbean
classic". Attempts have been and continue to be made
to interest publishers in her work but so far there has
been no response.
This year there are several new sponsors for 2000 who
have each promised EC$500. H.M. King Robert the Bald and
Mr. Chris Doyle the Caribbean marine publisher have both
announced that they will remain sponsors for this year's
event.
This means that instead of having one prize covering the
gamut of writing categories there will be this year a
separate prize for (i) poetry (ii) fiction (iii)
non-fiction and (iv) biography. The amounts of each prize
will be announced some time in November when all the
sponsors have actually coughed up!
Submit your entry as soon as you possible. By the
deadline last year there were only a few submissions from
Antiguans so a further deadline was announced of an extra
week! During this extended period Ms. Quinn brought her
manuscript to the committee. And on the last day of the
extension a manuscript of wonderful poetry was handed in
by Karil Sampson of Antigua who was judged to be third.
Graeme Knott, owner/skipper of the beautiful Swan
"Pavlova" wrote a great story called "When
the Volcano Blows" that is now being considered for
a film.
All the judges have agreed to do this arduous but
fascinating job again this year.
